NRI sponsors National Review’s popular Books, Arts & Manners section—an explicitly nonpolitical section of the magazine—in full accordance with legal counsel. Since its founding, National Review has made coverage of and commentary on the culture an integral part of its mission. The “BA&M” section now has even greater prominence within the NR landscape, and therefore greater reach and potential impact. The NationalReview.com website aggregates related cultural articles so that there is a deep and rich repository of online content covering a wide range of topics from music and art critiques to book and film reviews.
Buckley—known to many as a novelist, sportsman, and musician—himself lived a life rich in artistic, cultural, and literary pursuits. He had a deep understanding of their power and the essential role they play in realizing a life well lived. NRI has embraced this aspect of WFB’s legacy, hosting and supporting a variety of cultural events. For example, NRI hosted a piano recital at a supporter’s home which featured acclaimed pianist Philip Edward Fisher and our own Jay Nordlinger, a Bach organ recital at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas prior to the WFB Prize Dinner, and a dinner discussion with author Al Felzenberg about his book A Man and His Presidents: The Political Odyssey of William F. Buckley Jr. (Yale University Press, 2017).
The Institute started a virtual book club in April 2020, featuring regular talks on a selected book with the author or those close to the author and often highlighting books by WFB.
The Books, Arts & Manners section remains a central and vital component of the magazine’s voice and of Buckley’s lasting legacy of influencing the greater culture. We are proud to honor this legacy, both through direct support for this section of the magazine and through our support of artistic and cultural events and pursuits.

Selected Writings of William F. Buckley Jr. and National Review’s Books, Arts & Manners
… And Culture is a compilation of the best of William F. Buckley Jr. and National Review’s writings on culture. The book was created for guests of the Fourth Annual William F. Buckley Jr. Prize Dinner as a token of our appreciation for their friendship and support of our mission. Held in New York City at Gotham Hall on October 25, 2017 the dinner was a celebration of the Books, Arts & Manners section of National Review.
