The American public, the conservative movement, and—it often seems—the Obama administration are divided over foreign policy. There’s little rhyme or reason to U.S. actions abroad. We are leaving Iraq, entering Uganda, and toppling foreign leaders while “leading from behind.” Across-the-board defense cuts loom, but the country has no national-security strategy to match this budget path. Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidates offer varied and inchoate views about American statecraft.

At this moment of ambiguity, here are some of the questions we should be asking: How should our finances affect our foreign policy? What role should the military play in advancing the cause of freedom abroad? Which is the greater danger: American retreat from the world, or American overextension?

On the Ropes: What William F. Buckley Jr. Can Teach Today's Conservatives
[watch videos]
American Enterprise InstituteNational Review Institute
March 3, 2009, 5:00 p.m.
American Enterprise Institute, Washington, DC.
A discussion co-sponsored by National Review Institute & American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research

A year after William F. Buckley Jr.'s death, conservatives find themselves at a political low point and divided over what to do next. An enduring hallmark of conservatism is the belief that tradition includes deposits of wisdom that can guide decisions today. In that spirit, a panel of distinguished conservatives took a fresh look at one of conservatism's seminal moments: the founding of National Review in 1955. An examination of Buckley’s inaugural editorial showed how conservatives have succeeded in the past--and shed light on how they might face the challenges of today.

At the panel, AEI senior fellow Christopher DeMuth, Claremont Review of Books editor Charles Kesler, and National Review senior editor Ramesh Ponnuru discussed the continuing impact of Buckley's thought and the future of American conservatism. AEI president Arthur C. Brooks moderated.
